Welcome to Bungay's Emmanuel Church

Rev'd Bruce Waldron

Welcome
If you are a visitor in Bungay or its surrounds, please feel free to pop in and worship with us on a Sunday morning at 10.45, then stop and chat after the service over a cuppa. The folk at the church are always welcoming and are a mine of information about the town so if you would like to meet some locals and learn a bit about Bungay, Emmanuel is a helpful place to visit.

Our worship services are also held at 6.30pm on most Sunday evenings (except August) and you would be very welcome.

Warm and Informal
Worship at Emmanuel Church is typical of a church that is both URC and Methodist - warm and informal, gentle and encouraging and we are proud of both sides of our heritage. We are also proud of our beautiful Pipe Organ and lovely buildings and we leave the front doors open in the mornings so that visitors can enjoy our place of worship or come and have a moment of rest with God in its peaceful warmth. When the weather allows, please take a few moments to enjoy our beautifully tended gardens.

Most of all at Bungay, we value God's love for us and we enjoy sharing that with each other and folk who comes to worship with us. There is plenty of activitiy at Emmanuel, to cater for all ages.

We have a varied selection of activities for you to enjoy - here is a sample:

  • Pilots, our children's group, meets on Wednesdays at 7.00pm in the Orange Hall. New members are welcome to join - just call and ask.
  • The choir is very active at Emmanuel and is always open to new members, providing they can sing of course. Practice is on Friday nights at 7.30, in the church.
  • The Luncheon Club provides a nutritious and tasty meal for the elderly on alternate Fridays.
  • The Women's Fellowship
  • Junior Church meets during Morning Worship.

Click the Current Events link to see what's happening this month, or why not just come along and enjoy the really friendly fellowship and lovely worship.

About the Church
Emmanuel Church, in Upper Olland Street, is so-called from the joining together as one congregation of the members of the former Congregational Church on that site and those of the Methodist Church previously in Trinity Street, in 1976. It tries to incorporate into its life and witness the Christian experience and insights of both these denominations. It does so in two ways:

Firstly, it forms part of the Waveney Valley Ecumenical Partnership (WVEP) a partnership of ten churches, Methodist, URC and URC/Anglican.

The Partnership comprises six Methodist Churches: Ilketshall St. Andrew, Rumburgh, Woodton, Fressingield, Harleston and Pulham Market; three URC Churches: Denton, Wortwell and Harleston. The Denton Church is both URC and Anglican, belonging both to the WVEP and the Earsham Benefice. The congregation worship alternately at St Mary's Church and the URC Chapel.

Ministry is provided by Methodist and United Reformed Church Ministers. The Ministry Team Co-ordinator, Revd. Bruce Waldron came to us from the Uniting Church of Australia via the URC. The Revd Ian Griffiths is ordained through the Methodist Church. Although the procedures by which a Minister is called differ slightly between the two traditions, the final decision is made by a United Meeting of the whole Partnership, in which everybody has a voice and comes to a decision by a free vote.

On this site, we hope to share with you something of our history and traditions and beliefs; give you a description of the Sunday-by-Sunday and day-by-day activities of our Church; and post notice of events as they are about to occur.
